lake Taupō

the ultimate destination

Welcome to the Taupō region, the heart of Aotearoa New Zealand’s beautiful North Island.

Located in the centre of the North Island, Lake Taupō is an incredible sight. It is the largest freshwater lake in Australasia, and the same size as Singapore! This huge, shining expanse of water, moving between aquamarine blue and jade green, is crystal-clear to a depth of 13 metres. It is home to one of the best wild trout fisheries in the world, several types of native fish and native kōura (crayfish).

On the northern shores of the lake is our bustling lakeside resort town of Taupō. Our town has photo-ready mountains and lake vistas every way you turn. As you travel around the lake, you will find every landscape you can imagine, from snow-blanketed winter ski fields and volcanic deserts. We have plenty of ancient forests, stunning rivers and the thundering Huka Falls (which you will get to see up close with 4Play!) You can’t miss the three towering volcanoes in the awesome and otherworldly landscape of Tongariro National Park which is located on the doorstep of the Tongariro River and the township of Tūrangi.

There’s plenty to see and do in our amazing region, famous for having an abundance of world-class activities to choose from. From jet-boating to rafting, skydiving to bungy jumping, there’s no shortage of exciting things to see and do.

It all awaits you. Just a 3 hour drive south of Auckland, a 2 hour drive south of Hamilton or 1 hour drive south from Rotorua.
